An industrial router SIM should be chosen for the environment and the workload. That means signal strength at the actual installation point rather than on a coverage map; realistic data volumes for the router and everything behind it; whether the device stays in one place or moves between areas; and how quickly somebody can diagnose a fault without getting in a van.

Coverage is the first test, and it should not be judged from your office. Industrial routers go into difficult places: utility cabinets, rural outbuildings, construction compounds, vehicle depots, ports and temporary event sites. Estimate from device activity rather than device count. A router can look quiet for weeks, then pull a large update or reconnect after an outage and consume a substantial share of the month in an afternoon.
For fixed installations, prepaid allowances are usually easier to control than open-ended consumer arrangements, because each SIM can be aligned to its use case without paying for capacity that will never be touched. Build for Failure, Not Ideal Conditions
